The groundwater arsenic contamination in Bangladesh is a phenomenon of surface ero- sion, transportation and deposition in the form of Delta and ∼lood Plain. While dealing with such geomorphological units like Tableland, Flood Plain, Delta and Hill Tract in Bangladesh, we have found the possibility of having huge arsenic contaminattion free groundwater reservoir in selected areas in Bangladesh. The results presented are the outcome of our last 5 years, field survey analysing for arsenic of water of twentyfive thousand eight hundred ninetyseven hand tubewells in sixtyfour districts of Bangladesh comprising four existing geomorphological regions (a) Deltaic region (including coastal region), (b) Flood Plain, (c) Tableland and (d) Hill Tract. In this report, we will highlight (1) the area in Bangladesh where groundwater is not arsenic contaminated and the' possibility to use shallow hand tubewells as potential groundwater resource for drinking purpose and (2) arsenic contaminations scenario of deep tubewells (above 100 meters) all over Bangladesh and suitable depth in arsenic contaminated area to get safe water.

The action of drugs an living systems is a membrane-based process. Their interaction at the membrane surface/interior and transport through it induces a change in the physical properties of the membrane, of which fluidity is among the most important ones. The lipophilic drugs can affect this fluidity directly through their incorporation into the lipid matrix, whereas the action of the hydrophilic drugs is confined mostly at the membrane-water interface. Using the liposomal membranes of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline, a comparative study of the effect of a hydrophilic drug, chloroquine sulphate, and a lipophilic drug, hydrocortisone, on the membrane fluidity, measured in terms of anisotropy, is presented. From the membrane anisotropy-temperature curve, the associated enthalpy change has been calculated. Results show that the two drugs affect the membrane order in two different ways, indicating that there is a difference in the interaction of these two drugs with the liposomal membrane at the molecular level.Keywords

We present here the response of a lipid water dispersion to an applied ac field. The electrical study of the system shows that the conductance increases with the applied bias. However with increase in the frequency of the signal the variation of conductance is less pronounced. To explain the variation of the conductance at various frequencies, we have employed the effective medium approach. The results match with the experimental values to a good approximation.Keywords

We present an ion trap design of end-cap geometry and numerically calculate its potential. An rf-resonator of quality factor 800(20) has been fabricated for delivering high voltage to the trap. An optical frequency standard will be developed by trapping and laser cooling a single 171Yb+. Optical arrangements for photoionization, laser cooling and detection are also described.Full Text

Background: Koro is a psychiatric illness prevailing at Asia-pacific region with its strong cultural underpinnings. Several large epidemics of koro were reported from India including West Bengal in last few decades. But till date a well planned follow up study is lacking in literature to understand its course and outcome. Method: The present study was planned with objectives: 1.To determine the socio demographic profile of the study population 2.To find out the treatment seeking behaviour of the study population. In 6 months period, 92 consecutive patients with symptoms of koro reported in different disciplines of a tertiary care government hospital of West Bengal. Data on socio-demographic profile, referral points, treatment seeking pattern was collected from 64 patients who gave consents. -Result: Among the whole sample (N=64), 76.56% (n=49) were male and 23.44% (n=15) female. Majority were educated up to primary, single, agricultural work or student by occupation, belonged to low income Hindu rural joint family for male and nuclear family for female. Majority were referred from either private or government doctors or hospitals and reported first at non-psychiatric OPD. Almost 95% had new/old case(s) of ‘koro’ in their locality. Most of the cases reported of trying home remedies before reporting to the hospital. Conclusion: In all societies any issue related to genitalia of adult males and females governed by a pervasive set of social norms which is sensitive to handle and may only be modified by education.

ZnS nanobelts and ZnS@reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites were synthesized via simple solvothermal treatments. The chemical composition, structure and optical properties of ZnS nanobelts and ZnS@rGO nanocomposites samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),Raman Spectroscopy and FESEM, UV-visible spectroscopy. We have used UV-Visible absorption spectra to find the optical band gap of prepared ZnS nanobelts and ZnS@rGO nanocomposites, direct bandgap of pure ZnS is 2.70 eV and that in case of ZnS@rGO is about 2.59 eV. The bandgap of pure ZnS nanostructure differ significantly from bulk ZnS due to the quantum confinement effect in nanostructure. ZnS nanostructure and ZnS@rGO nanocomposites were used as a photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation.Keywords

A strong demand of a separate time zone by northeast populace has been a matter of great debate for a very long period. However, no implementable solution to this genuine problem has yet been proposed. The CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, CSIR-NPL (the National Measurement Institute, NMI, o f India and custodian o f Indian Standard Time, IST) proposes an implementable solution that puts the country in two time zones: (i) IST-I (UTC + 5: 30 h, represented by longitude passing through 82 °33 E) covering the regions falling between longitude 68 °7 E and 89 °52 E and (ii) IST-II (UTC + 6: 30 h, represented by longitude passing through 97°30E) encompassing the regions between 89°52E and 97°25E. The proposed demarcation line between IST-I and IST-II, falling at longitude 89 °52 E, is derived from analyses o f synchronizing the circadian clocks to normal office hours (9: 00 a.m. to 5 : 30p.m.). This demarcation line passes through the border of West Bengal and Assam and has a narrow spatial extension, which makes it easier to implement from the railways point o f view. Once approved, the implementation would require establishment of a laboratory for ‘Primary Time Ensemble - I I ’ generating IST-II in any o f the north-eastern states, which would be equivalent to the existing ‘Primary Time Ensemble-I’ at CSIR-NPL, New Delhi.Keywords
